CASE STUDY: North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent, Regional Traffic Communication System Replacement

The A55 is the main expressway through North Wales running from the end of the M53 in the east all the way through to Holyhead Port on Anglesey. It is the main economic artery from the motorway network in the North West of England across North Wales and onwards by ferry to Ireland. It forms part of the Trans-European Road Network that links Ireland with Russia and into Central Europe.
It provided the NWTMC with an intuitive map based ‘back office’ system capable of providing information to, and receiving information from other separate systems now and in the future. These existing systems include the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and data from the Welsh National Traffic Database System (WNTDS) in order to overlay incident/congestion information and journey time on the new map facility such that the entire network could be monitored and traffic plans/strategies set from one Graphical User Interface.
The projects main objectives were to replace the road traffic sign controls, upgrade the network communications and provide a high integrity dual redundant SCADA system to allow the North Wales traffic operators to set specific information on the A55 traffic signs to alert drivers of the road conditions, driver awareness and travel time information.
Traffic alerts and alarms notify the control room of any operation or maintenance issues on the road network. The appropriate action can be quickly taken to mitigate and resolve the problem. Dynamic mapping updates in real time, allowing the operators to zoom into congested areas and take the appropriate corrective actions to set traffic plans to quickly notify drivers and minimise delays.
