Runway Monitoring

Runway Monitoring

Boschung ATLAS (Automated Take-off and Landing Assessment System) utilises a combination of several field-proven sensing technologies to assess runway contaminant and snow levels to reduce runway excursions. In line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) established Global Reporting Format (GRF), the system provides the following information:

  • Runway condition code (RWYCC), a number between 0 and 6 that reflects the runway braking capability as a function of the surface condition
  • A normalised description of the type of contamination on the runway
  • An assessment of the depth of the contamination
  • An assessment of the contamination coverage

The contaminant sensor (IT-RWY) offers platform for quick sensor replacement, being installed in modular, resilient cases with connectors. Combined with its low power consumption, ATLAS provides a solution optimised for long lasting operations.

ATLAS is scalable, being able to be customised according to the specificities of different airport types (international, middle-sized or unmanned) for all regions of the world and all climates. The number and type of the system’s sensors can also be adjusted to specific runway lengths and optimised for the frequency of snow falls as well as make use of existing airport weather information systems.

Heathrow Runway - ATLAS

We are proud to partner with Boschung as the exclusive UK provider of their state-of-the-art ATLAS system a cutting-edge solution designed to elevate runway safety, operational efficiency, and environmental responsiveness at airports.

At Heathrow Airport, ATLAS has been successfully deployed on both the North and South runways, complemented by four additional taxiway Ice Early Warning Outstations. This advanced system integrates embedded pavement sensors and weather stations powered by machine learning algorithms to assign Runway Condition Codes (RCCs) in compliance with Global Reporting Format (GRF) standards.

The result is real-time runway condition updates and early ice warnings, enabling ground maintenance teams to act precisely, at the right place, at the right time.

ATLAS delivers continuous, data-driven feedback, empowering proactive decision-making based on a fusion of local and external weather data. This implementation marks a significant step forward in airport safety and efficiency, setting a new benchmark for intelligent runway management.
