Heathrow Cargo Tunnel
Heathrow Airport’s Cargo Tunnel is a critical operational link between the Terminal 4 Cargo area and the Central Terminal Area. The Cargo Tunnel facilitates a large number of vehicle movements for cargo, catering, maintenance vehicles, airport operations and transferring passengers.
Our objective was to enhance tunnel operations through a fully integrated system upgrade, with a focus on safety, efficiency and maintainability. Delivered in parallel with major civil works, the project addressed existing limitations while future proofing it’s systems.
A key feature of the new upgrade is a cutting-edge Automatic Incident Detection (AID) solution, utilising 40 thermal imaging cameras with onboard video analytics, offering real-time monitoring. Outperforming traditional CCTV, especially in conditions such as smoke, glare or darkness.
The result is a safer tunnel environment where operators benefit from greater visibility and reduced incident alert times.
