Project Overview
The North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA) required a unified Traffic Management System (TMS) to monitor and control key strategic routes across their network.
Their goal was to integrate multiple traffic‑critical subsystems into one coherent platform, improving situational awareness, operational consistency and incident response across the region.
The Challenge
NMWTRA needed a centralised system capable of managing a diverse range of roadside technologies spread across North Wales.
Key challenges included:
- Integrating numerous independent subsystems under a common interface.
- Simplifying operator workflows without compromising control flexibility.
- Ensuring consistent, rules‑driven responses to incidents across the network.
- Enhancing monitoring capabilities for live video, alarms and the Emergency Telephone System.
Expanding system functionality while keeping existing hardware in service, avoiding the cost of a full redesign.
The Solution
PDS delivered a unified Traffic Management System (TMS) built around an ICONICS SCADA interface, consolidating all core monitoring and control functions into a single, operator-friendly environment.
Integrated Sub‑System Control
- Variable Message Sign Systems (VMSS)
- Environmental Control Systems (ECS)
- Automated Incident Detection (AID) for Conwy, Penmaenbach and Pen‑y‑Clip tunnels
- Regional Traffic Control System (RTCS)
- Britannia Bridge VMSS
- Emergency Telephone System
All systems now operate through one clear user interface.
Master Plan & Decision Support
- A Master Plan tool enables coordinated operation of multiple subsystems according to NMWTRA’s procedures.
- A Decision Support module uses alarms as logical triggers for rule-based recommendations.
- When rules are broken, operators receive pop‑ups suggesting the correct Master Plan.
- If no action is taken, Decision Support can automatically implement the plan, ensuring fast, consistent responses – especially in high‑pressure situations.
Enhanced Monitoring & Incident Management
- Integration of live video, incident alarms and emergency telephone monitoring gives operators a real‑time, network-wide view.
- The map‑based interface speeds up identification and coordination of incidents.
Cost‑Efficient Hardware Improvements
- Targeted upgrades to existing NMWTMS PLCs ensured they could meet new system demands.
- Additional interfaces were installed in existing cabinets, improving access without requiring major infrastructure replacement.
- This approach significantly expanded capability while keeping costs minimal.
Conclusion
The solution improves network visibility, speeds up incident response and supports consistent, reliable operation across North and Mid Wales.
